Wow. I had become quite bored with Sparks’ latest novels, feeling they were cookie-cutter romance novels, but this book is a return to his old writing style. Similar to The Notebook, and A Walk to Remember, this book is a must read for any Sparks’ fan, as well as anyone wanting an old fashioned love story…full of love, heartache, romance, fulfillment, tragedy, and sacrifice. Well done, well written, and just fabulous.

As others have mentioned, I ran out and bought this the day it came out. His books are the only ones I will do that for. I couldn’t put this book down. It tore my heart apart reading this and I wanted to shake some of the characters, hug some of them, and cry with them. Sparks did something with these characters to bring them to life for me and I found myself getting to know them and I even found myself talking out loud to them as I read. There were instances where I would say “What??? NO!” or “Just turn around and walk away!” This book will tear at your heart strings and cause the tears to flow freely. It’s an emotional rollercoaster. Great book!!

I own every Nicholas Sparks book and Dear John is definitely my favorite. Because of his fantastic ability to capture every detail, I felt as if I knew each character personally. This was a story of true, unconditional love. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read! However, I must warn you – it’s a tear jerker so keep some tissues handy.

Just as I was about to give up on Nicholas Sparks after reading a string of mediocre novels following his first three blockbuster hits, I decided to give him one more chance. I’m glad I did! This is by far the best book he’s written–even better than “The Notebook” and the two that followed, “Message in a Bottle” and “A Walk to Remember.” I started reading “Dear John” at 8 PM one evening and couldn’t put it down until I finished in the wee hours of the morning. Written in the first person by the young male protagonist, John Tyree, he tells the heartwarming story of his romance with the girl of his dreams–Savannah Lynn Curtis, whom he meets by chance one day on the beach. Their background and personalities are strikingly different, but yet they form an unexplainable bond that grows into a powerful love. Savannah is almost too good to be true, and I kept thinking: “Gee, I wish my son (who is John’s age) could meet a girl like that!” I won’t go into any details to spoil the plot, which turns out to have many twists and turns–not only involving John’s relationship with Savannah but also a heartwarming story concerning John’s father, John’s time in the service, and his thoughts and emotions in general. This is a beautiful story, and frankly when I finished it left me emotionally drained where I wasn’t able to get back to sleep just thinking about it. Not only is “Dear John” an entertaining read, but it was very well written and fast paced with a stirring conclusion. Congratulations to Nicholas Sparks on another winner!

This book was simply incredible. I laughed, I cried and I loved every word in this book. It’s such a realistic story that can be read with ease. From the second I started reading this I did not want to put it down. I really can’t describe in words how it made me feel, but once you read it I know you will feel it too. Nicholas Sparks is an amazing writer and definately knows how to get to your heart.

Yeah, WOW hardly describes this book. I don’t wish to put out any spoilers, so I won’t, but suffice it to say that I haven’t seen the movie, though someone at work has. We talked about the two and I can only say that the two endings (the book and the movie) are completely different!
When a book makes you cry, and I do mean boo-hoo crying, at least for me, that’s a richly written book, that is a delight to read. I wasn’t the least bit interested in reading this book, because I’d always thought Mr. Sparks’ books were “mushy,” but when it knocked Avatar out at the box office the weekend of 2/6 as advertised on the MSN homepage, well, I just had to read it.
Don’t get me wrong; I’ve heard that Mr. Sparks writes awesome books, but I’ve just never been that interested in them…until now. I want to buy every book he’s ever written and have them “delivered to my Kindle in under 60 seconds,” but I’ll have to be happy with this one for now.
The characters were richly written, and you felt as though you were there with them. You felt their joy, happiness, sadness, hearbreak, the entire gamut of their emotions. To me, that’s a book wonderfully written; when you can see the characters, and feel what they’re feeling, wow! The geographic locations were richly described, the personalities of all involved made you feel as though you actually knew them.
I kind of felt like a fool as I would sit outside crying; I had to take my hanky with me, and I was afraid I was going to get my beloved Kindle wet. I was afraid it would short out or something. When I neared the end, I didn’t want my kids to see me crying over a book, so I went to bed with my Kindle and my hanky. OMG – - I literally boo hooed (is that a word?) into my hanky for some time, and my heart just about burst with anticipation (again, no spoilers from me). I really wanted the book to go on and on and on and…but all good things must end, and I was saddened when it did.
As my title says, “Grab Some Tissue!” and if you’re not embarassed by having your family see you cry, read out in the open, otherwise, you may have to hide out for a bit as you read this book, but believe me, it will be well worth it.
Some might say it’s the classic boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy goes off to war, boy gets Dear John letter. Oddly enough, his name is John, so that would stand to reason. It’s much more than the “boy meets girl, they fall in love” story, and Mr. Sparks gets you involved in that from the beginning, so that makes this a delightful read – - you’re part of it, you’re in the thick of it, and as you get to know the characters, and as the story unfolds, I think you’ll really be glad you read this book.
If I could have given it more than 5 stars I would have. Thank you for reading my review.

So i finished the book and saw the movie, and again, the book was the best. I must say that if you have a boyfriend or a husband in the army…maybe you shouldent read this book.
Almost everyone loves a great sappy love story, and Dear John is a bonus because it really gets to you. But even though i liked it, i had some problums with it too. Savanah loved John, she never stoped, so why would she marry someone else knowing John would eventuly come home? I’m not shallow and i have a boyfriend going into the Maries so i get the whole “Its hard because he might never come home” thing. But still i found Savanahs character to be totaly heartless. How could she do it? How could she love a guy and weight for years and then suddenly just send a letter saying shes marring someone else? She dident even TELL him it was TIM. I have sympathy towords Savanah, but at the same time i found myself boiling over her obvious disloyalty.

I just finished reading Dear John, and I’m still in tears because of the ending. I loved every bit of the book so much, and even though I wish things might have worked out differently for John and Savannah, the fact that it doesn’t end like a fairy tale makes me love it that much more. Nicholas Sparks is amazing at creating great stories with lessons in them, but not making the book seem too fake. Because the fact is, life isn’t always going to turn out the way you want it to. I have never had my heart warmed and then broken in the same book, but Dear John has done it. I look at this as a positive, and have never read another book like it.

DEAR JOHN by Nicholas Sparks is a novel I would read again. It may be your typical love story, but has surprising twists the reader is confronted with on the first page of the novel. However by the end of the story, I had completely forgotten about what I had initially read because I did not want it to be true. I wanted a happy ending and that is not necessarily the message Sparks is trying to convey in this story.
I laughed. I cried. I felt nearly all the emotions John and Savannah felt. That is the sign of an incredible book. The way Sparks wrote the novel engulfed me in the story to the point where I had to set out time during the day to get things done, otherwise I would have just read this book all day.
I may be a sucker for sappy love stories, but who isn’t? The book still had deep insight into the purpose of relationships and how one person can change the lives of everyone around them–like Savannah did. The ending of the story can be interpreted several ways: Savannah thought she loved Tim as much as he had always loved her so she stayed married to him out of naivety, or because marriage is a commitment and she did not want to give up. No matter the reason, John is still left high and dry, only to serve his country and live without the one and only woman he ever loved.
I was able to feel the magnitude of the pain John felt when he saw Savannah for the first time wearing a wedding ring. The description in the novel is extremely vivid and eloquent. The situations in which the two are placed are realistic and allowed me to picture the settings easily.
However, because the story is told from a young man’s point of view, it is obvious there are a few things that are too good to be true. The way John describes Savannah is a bit unrealistic at times. He points out details and soft images that a soldier stereotypically would not notice, so it is hard to believe he would think that way.
Another possible plot hole was the fact the two fell in love in two weeks time. Yes, that may be possible, but for them to stay together long distance through college and fighting a war in Iraq made it hard to believe their summer romance would last. I felt this way especially because they were hardly able to talk on the phone and letters were all they had to communicate. That would be hard to continue after only knowing someone for less than a month.
These two plot holes are easily ignored because of the tone of the story. It is not a novel one would read to analyze, but rather a book to enjoy on the beach or when feeling lonely. It could easily be read in a day if time permitted.
If you love Nicholas Sparks, you will love Dear John. Sparks’ writing in this novel reverts back to his classic style and is sure to be enjoyed.
Oh, and one last thing: I would recommend the book over the movie any day of the week!
